Irvine sits in the center of Orange County, about 40 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and was built from William Pereira's master plan for the Irvine Ranch around the UC Irvine campus. The city is organized into planned villages, each with its own architectural style, parks and trails, and its landmarks include the Orange County Great Park with its tethered orange balloon and the open-air Irvine Spectrum Center with its Giant Wheel. Housing ranges from 1970s lakeside tract homes in Woodbridge to Spanish Colonial and Monterey-style streets in Northwood and newer hillside villages backed by protected open space.
Getting around
Irvine Station, at 15215 Barranca Pkwy, is served by Metrolink's Orange County Line and Inland Empire-Orange County Line and by the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. The free Irvine CONNECT shuttle links the station with the Great Park and Irvine Spectrum Center, running every 20 minutes daily, and OCTA buses cover the rest of the city (the older iShuttle ended in June 2025). Interstate 5, Interstate 405, SR-133 and SR-261 all pass through the city, and John Wayne Airport is just west in Santa Ana.
Neighborhoods to know
Woodbridge. Built in phases in the 1970s and 1980s, Woodbridge centers on two man-made lakes used for boating and fishing, with neighborhood parks tied together by the Yale Loop. Homes include detached houses, townhomes and condos set around greenbelts.
Northwood. A northern village of Spanish Colonial and Monterey-style homes lined with old eucalyptus windrows, Northwood has about 161 acres of parks, centers on Meadowood Community Park, and sits near the Hicks Canyon Trail.
Turtle Rock. The first hillside village on the Irvine Ranch, Turtle Rock follows a looping main road with homes stepped along the slopes, preserved hilltops and trails that connect to the Turtle Rock Nature Center.
Quail Hill. Begun in 2000, this hillside village mixes several traditional home styles and is surrounded by about 600 acres of protected open space, with a ridgeline trail toward Bommer Canyon.
